Biography

Hi there! My name is Jimmy Lin, and I am a student at Carleton College studying mathematics.

What else do I do? In my free time, I enjoy hobbies such as reading, playing musical instruments such as the violin and piano, writing and thinking about the meaning of life, and working out from time to time. I also value self-awareness, which means I will be meditating and journaling from time to time.

If you catch me taking a break, you will probably find me reading a Wikipedia article, daydreaming about my idealized future, or just simply chilling watching some funny videos on YouTube.

My Life Philosophy

What is my life philosophy, you might ask? Or what even is a life philosophy? There are going to be tons of different answers out there, but for me, it comes down to one question:

WHAT ARE YOUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES IN LIFE?

For me, a priority of mine is to enjoy my life to the fullest. That is why there is a simple mantra that I use to determine whether or not I should do something.

Do what makes you happy and don’t do what doesn’t

It is as simple as that, yet it is so easy for us to forget that sometimes. Sometimes we get caught up doing something because we feel like we need to do it. We feel pressure from our colleagues. Sometimes the pressure just comes from within! Don’t feel like you need to do something because everybody else is doing it, do something because you feel that it is right and will make your life more enjoyable.

Now, do I always get this right? No. I will catch myself from time to time either ruminating on something that I cannot control, or making an ill-informed decision that will keep on bothering me. But by and large, when there are situations that would otherwise be equally “good” morally or otherwise, sticking with my one mantra keeps me going more often than not.

Values/Interests/Beliefs

There are a few things that I value, in addition to enjoying my life to the fullest as outlined above. Here is a look at some of them:

Collaboration/Cooperation- Nothing beats having a great team working together to solve a problem or work on a project. I believe that we stand to gain a lot more when we stand together, building on each other’s ideas.

Interconnectedness- Everything is connected in some way, shape, or form. Whether that be a world event that occurred half a planet away, or understanding how the fundamentals of calculus are intertwined with physics, there is likely to be a connection somewhere. You just got to keep on looking.

Learning- There is a whole universe out there for you to explore. Go out there and learn some more about it. Also. Have fun while you are at it.
